WorldGate Communications has signed up five cable companies with a combined customer base of 10 million households to participate in its online TV trials set to start in January. Consumers will pay around $4.95 a month for the high-speed connection direct to their television screens. The company also plans to offer hyperlinks to the Web sites of advertisers and television shows, chat lines, email, and an online community center of Web sites offering local events, entertainment options, and classified ads. The company will use advanced analog cable converters that received data at speeds up to 100 kbps. By the spring, WorldGate said it will add digital converters for even faster connections.
"CyberBank" the world's first Internet-only bank is now open. Available to AT&T WorldNet Service subscribers, Atlanta Internet Bank's initial products include interest-bearing checking accounts, direct deposit, electronic bill payment, account transfer capability, and ATM cards. Future services planned by the new bank include loan products, brokerage services, IRA accounts, and credit and debit cards.
Netscape introduced a new integrated client software product called Netscape Communicator, and the next-generation version of its SuiteSpot server. Communicator features five components including Netscape Navigator 4.0 browser software, Netscape Composer HTML authoring software, Netscape Messenger e-mail, Netscape Collabra group discussion software, and Netscape Conference real-time collaboration software.
The U.S. government plans to start building a system in 1997 to allow wireless access to the Internet, government. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to reserve radio frequencies in the 5GHz band now dedicated to satellite telecommunications. The wireless system, with data throughput 70-80 times larger than conventional phone lines, will complement the fiber-optic network that will from a central part of the information superhighway. The wireless network requires purchase of an antenna for around 20,000-30,000 yen, but local connections will be offered free of charge.
Awareness of the World Wide Web and Internet skyrocketed in the Advertising
Age/Market Facts survey. Of the 1,000 consumers surveyed, 82% said they
had heard of the World Wide Web, compared with only 44.7% last year. The
Internet, a term recognized by 82% last year, is now nearly ubiquitous,
at 93.5% awareness. The survey indicated that 27% of the general audience
have been online in the past six months, although it didn't break out how
many of those were regular users vs. those who had tried going online at
a friend's or in a store or elsewhere. Of the people who said they had been
online at least once, 80% said it was in the past six months.
