Yamaha Midplug
MIDPlug is a self-contained MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital
Interface) file playback system for use on the worldwide web. It
features a powerful, GM (General MIDI) software- based music
synthesizer which makes it easy to enhance web pages with
high-quality music. Once "plugged in," websurfers can enjoy listening
to MIDI files embedded in a web page, even before the page is fully
loaded.
Intuit Launches Banking System Online
BankNOW is geared to customers who wish to conduct banking
transactions such as bill paying and fund transfers online, but do
not use the personal finance software that is part of Intuit's
Quicken banking package. So far, 14 U.S. financial institutions,
including First Chicago and CoreStates Financial are using BankNOW,
with an additional eight committed to use the product
American Greetings Online
Among the products are American Greetings On-Line, to cost from
$1.50 to $3.95 plus postage, American Greetings Personal CardShop for
Home and Office, a CD-ROM costing $9.95, and American Greetings
CreataCard Plus, a software program that features more than 3,000
pre-designed greeting cards, invitations, stationery and
announcements. CreataCard Plus is developed and marketed by American
Greetings software partner Micrografx and is expected to sell for
$29.95.
TCI's Cable Modem Service rollout
Local content "will range from everything from school lunch menus
here in Fremont to traffic reports, weather, news, local sports,
movies, everything you can imagine," Ravenel said. "That will be done
often in partnerships with local content providers, including through
the local newspapers and other firms that are involved in offering
information on the World Wide Web specifically about the Bay area."
$30 Billion in Net Transactions By 2005
A study from market researchers Killen & Associates. predicts
that by 2000, the number of electronic cash transactions on the
Internet will amount to 9 billion. By 2005, the study estimates $30
billion worth of financial transactions will be zipping across the
Internet.
Excite, to personalize news search
Excite added a feature on its Net search engine that allows
users to personalize news, stock quotes, and other information
services. With its new personalization feature, called Excite Live,
visitors to Excite's Web site will be able to select specific types
of information they wish to receive, including sports scores,
features, news, financial information, and weather forecasts.
IBM creates Internet Banking Alliance
IBM has forged an alliance with more than a dozen major banks to
provide consumer banking services using Internet technology. Banks
will be able to use IBM's worldwide private network as well as the
Internet to enable their customers to do their banking
electronically.

Revenues Up
Advertising on the Web tallied $71.7 million in the first six
months of 1996, 83% higher than the 1995 half-year total, according
to a report from Jupiter Communications. At the current pace, New
York-based Jupiter predicts that ad revenues will swell to $312
million for all of 1996. The Internet will likely emerge as a $5
billion annual industry within the next four years, the research
company predicted.
