Hollywood studio's go to Intranets
A number of the major studio's have taken steps to build Intranet systems. Studio's put information like phone directories, most corporations include confidential data, such as sales figures, on their inhouse sites. Given that, security is a concern to the studios, which also make such information available to certain employees on the Intranet.
UUNet to use the Windows NT 4.0
UUNet's Windows Web hosting is based on Microsoft's newly-released NT Server. Other features include the FrontPage 1.1 Web authoring and management tool; the latest version of the tool for creating Web sites; and Microsoft Index Server, a search engine. Prices of dedicated NT Web hosting include a start-up fee of $5,000 and a monthly charge of $3,000. A shared service, at a lower price, will be available in early October.

Simon & Schuster, Lycos Publish Web Site Directory
Lycos Press has published Most Popular Web Sites, the first in a series of planned Internet-related books. The nationally distributed book comes with a CD-ROM including hyperlinks to 200,000 Web site reviews and features Lycos' 1,000 most popular destinations. The book is being published by Que, an imprint of Macmillan Publishing, a unit of Viacom-owned Simon & Schuster.

New York Times on PointCast
PointCast Inc. and New York Times are developing a "channel" for the newspaper to broadcast news and information this fall. The Times' PointCast network channel will draw both from the paper's print and electronic content. The Boston Globe and Los Angeles Times already provide content to PointCast, as do several Time Warner magazines including Time and People.

SportsLine USA - All-Sports Radio Station

A Web site devoted to the world of sports. SportsLine offers audio programming eight hours a day, seven days a week. SportsLine kicked off its audio component with a Penn State college football game broadcast.

WebTV Sets
WebTV Networks will charge about $20 monthly for Internet access using televisions and low-priced set-top boxes being manufactured by Sony and Philips Electronics Sony is advancing the launch date to September for its WebTV Internet Terminal because of strong demand from U.S. electronics retailers. The device has a list price of $350.

Mitsubishi to Offer Internet TV
Mitsubishi Consumer Electronics America said today it plans to bring a television with Internet capabilities to market as early as next summer. Mitsubishi did not release price estimates, but said the initial debut will focus on televisions with large screens measuring up to 40 inches. It would have access to the World Wide Web and other Internet services, a single remote, strong graphic and audio features.

AT&T with New Web Service
AT&T is launching a trial program allowing surfers of the World Wide Web to request nearly instantaneous telephone calls from businesses that advertise on the Internet. The new technology, called Instant Answers, will allow individuals to click on an icon on a company's homepage to request a call from a sales representative or service agent.
