Netscape goes for Internet on televisions
Netscape Communications is planning on expanding its sights in the
Web browser market to include surfing the Internet on televisions,
Network Computers, video game players and other devices that aren't
personal computers.
Los Angeles Times classifieds on line
The Los Angeles Times jumped on the online classifieds bandwagon
today with real estate listings that hope to keep the paper
competitive with the burgeoning online market. The Times' site
provides the California Association of Realtors' multiple listing
service, a comprehensive listing of all homes being sold through CAR.
The association currently supplies listings to Yahoo and is also in
negotiations with other sites.
Colleges stop Internet services
Many students were given free or low cost Net access in the dial
up access from their homes to the schools system. But most
university no longer have the resources with the growing amount of
people going online. department. San Jose State University uses
Pacific Bell to offer students and faculty dial up Internet access
for a discounted price of $14.95 per month after the getting the
first month free. (The normal rate is $19.95 per month.)
Now get Voice mail for your Email
CallWare voice mail software will work with Novell's upcoming
GroupWise 5 intra-company communication software. Written
specifically as a Netware Loadable Module (NLM), CallWare 5.2
integrates with GroupWise 5's Universal Mail Box feature and posts a
notice when a user has a voice mail message. The software uses a
telephone icon to distinguish voice mail from other messages, email,
faxes, and schedule reminders displayed in the Universal Mail
Box.
@Home to add information services
@Home announced Sixty new information services include CUC
International (Shoppers Advantage), Discovery Channel Online, E!
Online, SportsLine, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, ZD Net, and
CNET: The Computer Network. These companies will help @Home offer a
wide range of new cable Internet services, allowing customers to
bank, videoconference, check stocks, receive sports scores, and go
shopping online. Customers will use cable modems to get Internet
connections through systems used for cable TV transmissions, which
will send the data to their home PCs. Customers will be charged $30
to $40 per month on top of their normal cable bill for @Home's
proprietary service
Novel lunveiles a packaged set of tools for intranets
Included in the intranet-focused package is NetWare 4.11, along
with a new Internet Access Server that will provide a secure gateway
from Novell networks to the Internet. A multiprotocol router for a
wide area network and Internet links is also part of the bundle. The
access server will also come with an enhanced Web server and
applications for creating and managing Web sites. GroupWise 5.0 will
be unveiled at a September 12 event in New York with enhanced
Web-based capabilities. ManageWise is also part of Novell's Internet
push, with plans for Java-based management and access to ManageWise
via a Web browser planned for next year.
