Lycos over 50 million
Lycos announced it has surpassed more than 50 million unique URLs are now in the search engine's database. The biggest leg of the Point-Lycos-A2Z tripod, Lycos boasts it catalogs more URLs than any competitor. Competitors have countered variously that they are faster or more accurate than the Marlboro, Mass.-based pioneer engine on the Web.
US Net Backbone
Cable and Wireless said today that its Internet Exchange business unit entered an agreement with Erol's Internet & Computers to develop a national backbone for Internet access in the United States. Initial market plans include Washington; Baltimore; Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Chicago; Boston; Hartford, Connecticut; and New York.
Netscape Upgrades Home Page

The new features, added enable visitors to the site to more easily find information and resources. PowerStart enables users to tour through a series of choices, which it stores on the hard drives of their computers, and each time a user logs on to his or her home page it is constructed from scratch.PowerStart utilizes the capabilities of the company's Netscape ONE Open Network Environment, which includes a stock ticker applet, or small computer program, supplied by Quote.com, which updates stock prices in real time.

National Archives historic documents
The National Archives and Records Administration is making more of its vast collection of materials available on the Web. The agency is releasing a database of documents related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. It also is putting another database online, with photo and sound clips collected during the past 60 years, called the National Archives Audio-Visual Information Locator, or NAIL, for short

WebTV at a low price
The WebTV Network was launched last month, and Philips and Magnavox showed up to announce a joint venture for manufacturing the hardware. The set, officially titled the Philips Magnavox WebTV, will cost $329 and will come equipped with a 33-kbps modem, 16-bit stereo audio output, a credit card reader, a one-thumb remote control for browsing, and an infrared remote keyboard. It hooks up to a regular TV set for surfing the Web or sending email.
HP add to Web-Server Offerings
Hewlett-Packard has signed an agreement with Netscape to include Netscape SuiteSpot server software on the HP 9000 enterprise Web server product lines. HP also announced it is shipping the following -- Netscape Enterprise Server, Netscape Proxy Server and Netscape FastTrack Server software -- on its UNIX(R) system HP 9000 enterprise Web server product line:
NetHelper, launched this week.
NetHelper offers one-on-one assistance on a wide range of Internet-related topics, including e-mail, FTP, newsgroups, Web tools, Telnet, and IRC. Technical support is also provided for programming in Java, creating Web pages in HTML, or developing PERL/CGI scripts. Fees for the technical service start at $1.08 per minute or $65 an hour.
