Bell Atlantic offering Internet Service
Bell Atlantic is now offering Internet access service to consumers and businesses in the Washington and Baltimore metropolitan areas. The service has three pricing plans, with unlimited access available for $17.95 per month or a discounted annual access plan for $198. Hourly access is available for $4.95 per month for five hours and $1.95 for each additional hour.
Internet options for Microsoft's Windows
Microsoft will offer computer users the ability to choose and subscribe directly to an Internet service provider in their local area directly from the Windows desktop system. Its Windows 95 and Window NT desktop operating system software, when used in conjunction with its Internet Explorer 3.0 software, will provide computer users with this range of Internet access options. Microsoft Internet Referral Server, users can make a local telephone call or dial a toll-free number from all major Microsoft Internet Explorer markets.
Europe's PC sales will grow from Internet
Market research firm Context says in a survey that Europe's personal computer sales are expected to surge again later this year, boosted by business purchases and individual buyers excited by the Internet's potential.The survey said "Western Europe's personal computer sales grew by 10.4 percent in the second quarter to 3,580,040. But this was slower than the first quarter's 13.2 percent, and less than half of the red-hot 26 percent growth rate for all of last year. Americans have led the way in Internet access. About 35 percent of U.S. households have personal computers. In Europe the average is only about 20 percent, with Britain at 24 percent, Germany 18 percent and Italy 17, according to figures from Inteco.
PointCast service now has million Internet users
PointCast just reached its goal of one million registered viewers for its Internet news service The company said it was growing at a rate of 250,000 new registered users per month. The PointCast Network delivers broadcast news and information directly to viewers' computer screens. In addition, it has the capacity to offer customized advertising tailored to fit a computer user's personal interests.
Compaq still #1 in PC market
According to Dataquest, a market research firm in San Jose, Calif, the worldwide PC market, while slowing from record growth of 24.7 percent in 1995, is on track for about 17 to 19 percent growth in 1996. In the second quarter, the worldwide PC market grew at 16.5 percent, with 15.95 million PCs shipped in the quarter, vs. 13.68 million a year ago. Compaq leads with 9.7 percent of the world PC market. Packard Bell Electronics was number two in the United States, with 9.7 percent of the market and 580,000 units shipped in the quarter. IBM trailed Packard Bell with 511,000 units in the U.S., but its market share jumped to 8.6 percent, from 7.6 percent a year ago. IBM's unit growth climbed 33 percent. IDC's U.S. data for Apple ranks the Cupertino, Calif. company as fourth in the United States, with 410,000 units and a drop of 21 percent in shipments, from 522,000 a year ago. Its market share dropped to 6.9 percent, from 10.3 percent a year ago. Dell Computer is the fifth largest vendor, with 370,000 units shipped, and the biggest growth in the United States, up 50 percent and 4.9 percent market share.

http://intv.net Internet Television Network, is offering independent video news service on the Internet. The INTV service offers video news features in categories, including business, technology, entertainment, science, sports and travel. Internet users can access INTV's 30-second to 4-minute features through its World Wide Web site.
Caller ID now for the Web
Info InterActive introduced its Internet Call Manager telephone service, which is a "call waiting" service that identifies an incoming caller on a computer screen while the receiver is connected to the Internet. Besides caller-ID information, the user can decide to take the call, send it to voice mail, or forward the call with a click of the mouse. Also, "remote call control." Users can monitor calls going to their home phones from work or vice-versa without having to tell the program the IP address of where to send the caller-ID information. You won't get a busy signal as you downloaded that latest version of your Web browser because call waiting services provided by the phone companies didn't work with online services. Now users can get calls by paying a monthly fee for Internet Call Manager and installing a free software program but won't need any extra equipment because the system uses a proprietary call management
