Internet News
AT&T WorldNet to use Internet Explorer
Microsoft has now agreed to bundle AT&T WorldNet Internet
access service in Windows 95 software to be pre-loaded on PCs shipped
later this year. For its part, AT&T will distribute Microsoft's
Internet Explorer 3.0 browser with WorldNet. However, WorldNet
customers can still opt to use Navigator; AT&T signed a
non-exclusive deal with Netscape in February, when WorldNet
debuted.
New Entry-Level IBM PC
The PC 340 will ship with IBM PC Networking Tools, to allow it to
plug into existing networks and to be managed more easily once
installed. Its management features include Tivoli's TME NetFinity
tools, which let LAN administrators track systems and make changes.
It ships with either a 100-MHz or 133-MHz Pentium processor and a 850
Mbyte to 1.2 Gbyte hard disk, and will run Windows 95 and Windows
3.1.
Internet service providers Suffer Losses
Netcom On-Line Communications Services reported its second-
quarter results yesterday and came up $11.4 million in the red even
after a 260% climb in sales. That was only a day after its rival
PSINet said it had racked up a $10.9 million loss for the same
quarter. It posted sales of $28 million, compared with $10.5 million
for the same quarter last year and $24.1 million the first quarter
this year. A total of $4.6 million of the loss came from the
company's international start-up operations.
Intel's Connected PC
Intel "connected PC" which not only runs local productivity and
entertainment software, but takes full advantage of the Internet via
standard 28.8 Kbps modem communications to run so-called hybrid
applications which rely on local PC storage and memory to provide a
multimedia rich, more interactive user experience. "Even a Web
browser makes use of local storage, so that's a hybrid application,"
said Intel president and CEO Andy Grove. Grove said Intel is working
on designs for an "Advanced Connected PC" which would include: an
unnamed next- generation processor (probably Klamath, code-name for
the next version of Intel's Pentium Pro), with MMX, 3D graphics via
an accelerated graphics port developed by Intel, 3D audio,
"cyberphotography," and networked multimedia.
AltaVista Search new beta posted
Digital Equipment posted a beta version of a new AltaVista Search
technology that lets users quickly find information stored in PC
files, E-mail messages, file servers and more.
The AltaVista Search My Computer Private eXtension, or PX, is
based on the same technology that is used in Digital's popular
AltaVista World Wide Web search engine, which handles about 15
million inquiries each day. In May, the company outlined a broad
strategy to extend the search technology to the corporate environment
(IW, May 13)..
Lotus, PointCast Work on Intranet
Lotus Development and PointCast are to develop a new
Internet-based information delivery system based on Lotus Notes,
Lotus Domino, and PointCast's I-Server. Designed for corporate
intranets, the system will combine internal Notes data with external
news. The companies will use Domino, Lotus' integrated Notes and Web
server, to provide interactive information to a user's desktop via
PointCast's I-Server, a forthcoming new component of the PointCast
Network that lets companies distribute information internally.
Because it will sit inside a company's firewall, I-Server will reduce
the squeeze on corporate network bandwidth by as much as 75%,
according to the company. Data can be sent from the Internet to the
I-Server and then distributed internally, instead of having all
employees accessing the PointCast Network directly.
Netscape Navigator Gold pricing plan
Netscape announced a pricing plan for its Navigator Gold client,
From July 18 through Sept. 30, corporate customers can purchase
Navigator Gold and a software subscription for $69, which is 28% less
than the current $96 price of the navigation software bundled with a
subscription plan. The $69 promotional price includes a subscription
that gives users the rights to upgrades to Navigator Gold through
