Capitol Hill meeting over Web pages
House Democrats engaged Republicans in a subcommittee meeting over the majority's policy on posting Web pages.
According to Roll Call, a newspaper that covers Congress, Representative Vic Fazio (D-California) wanted to amend an appropriations bill to move $4 million out of the hands of the office that oversees the House computer resources. The budget scalpel was used to highlight Democrats' dissatisfaction with having access to subcommittee Web pages controlled by Republicans.
Fazio was also reportedly upset with the House computer system, saying the email system was not working properly, yet another $85 million for computer and telecommunications projects was being requested. The Appropriations Committee voted to approve the spending bill, which provides for day-to-day operations of the House.
Netcom to upgrade its network
Netcom has completed a six-month upgrade of its network backbone that should let data traffic flow faster and help the company keep up with the ever-increasing demand for bandwidth.
Faster backbones mean fewer and less noticeable Internet traffic jams when data clogs up like airplanes backed up along a runway. The backbones share traffic from many access providers, and data can travel from one backbone to another in the course of delivery. But most ISPs are upgrading their backbones in an effort to speed whatever portion of the information superhighway they're responsible for. The company's backbone hubs are now connected by ATM (aynchronous transfer mode) switches, a kind of technology that transmits data at a basic rate of 45 mbps, compared to 1.45 mpbs and 45 mbps for the T1 and T3 connections it replaces.
Internet Servey says increase use of intranets.
A Delphi Consulting Group survey of 400 companies on the Fortune 1000 list shows that 90 percent of companies are using or planning to use corporate intranets, but only 30 percent of those surveyed think that either Netscape Communications or Microsoft are going to win the battle of the browsers.
More than 50 percent of respondents believe that Web browsers will become the standard for desktop computing, even beating out proprietary operating systems such as Windows. But only ten percent of those surveyed believed that Netscape will become the dominant desktop environment for intranets, and only 20 percent thought Microsoft would be the dominant system or browser.
Yahoo $1.3 million loss
Yahoo announced a $1.3 million loss Wednesday, The company's stock slid $2.1, or 11.4 percent, to a new closing low Wednesday. Then Yahoo reported a loss for the quarter ending June 30, its first quarter as a public company. This quarter's loss compares to a profit of only $68,000 for the quarter ending March 31. Still, Yahoo's loss of 5 cents a share came in better than expected by most Wall Street analysts, who had predicted a 7 cent per-share loss.
Internet Explorer 3.0 beta delayed
It is now expected to be released "sometime late next week," not this week as originally anticipated. A member of the IE development team, Denise Wyn,said "The Beta2 release of IE30 will not be happening today. Please look for this release sometime late next week. As with all products under development, changes do occur to scheduling. I know you are all looking forward to this release and we want it to be a great experience for everyone."

Market of ISPs getting bigger
The nationwide total of ISPs now tops 3,000, according to the The List, a Web site that keeps track of ISPs. That number is up from fewer than 1,000 just six months ago, according to market research firm The Gartner Group. "This summer will be the topping-out point, and we will begin to see a decline in the number of ISPs by fall," said Eric Paulak, a research analyst at Gartner. "I expect that about 90 percent of current ISPs will be gone in the next five years." The good news for those that make it is that ISP profits are growing at a 30 percent clip, with revenues expected to top $1 billion this year.
