Citing research from International Data, Dell says it now ranks second only to Compaq Computer in sales to the corporate PC market, with 13 percent market share among U.S. medium and large businesses. It moved ahead of IBM and Hewlett-Packard in desktop sales last year to become the second largest PC manufacturer to the U.S. corporate market, in revenue terms. Apple Computer's sales of its Macintosh line of personal computers have dropped 30 percent to 50 percent in April and May compared to year-ago levels, the Wall Street Journal reports. In addition to the Mac sales decline, Computer Intelligence reported that Apple's unit shipments were down 29 percent in April and 27 percent in May, the newspaper said.

The financial magazine said in its July 15 issue that Gates, the founder of software giant Microsoft, has seen his company's stock rise about 40 percent this year, boosting his estimated net worth to $18 billion.
A recently released PC-Meter survey from The NPD Group shows that the number of women on the Net is up and that the popularity of sex-related sites is down. Here are the numbers, acording to the PC-Meter survey: --Men account for 87 percent of all visitors to sex sites. --Women accounted for 38.7 percent of all Net users in April, up from 31.7 percent in January. --A mere 19.4 percent of Web-active home PC users visited sex sites in April, down from 24.7 percent in January. Only the Playboy site managed to stay in PC-Meter's list of top-50 Web sites in April, while Penthouse took a tumble, drawing a paltry 3 percent of surfers, compared with its 8.1 percent in January.
TCI Media Services in Olympia, WA, has a Web site that garnered 12,000-15,000 hits last month alone and sells such ancillary services as Web page design, linking and hosting. For $150, the cable system will even locate a local access provider for the online-beginner client, provide and install all necessary software on the client's computer and supply an hour of training. The Olympia system created the site, Northwest Passage (http://www.passnet.com), two years ago and experienced marginal results. But it has taken off in recent months since sales manager Brad Bradberry began promoting the site on the cable system with a photo-digital show called "Cyberline" that features home pages of various advertisers. Visits to Northwest Passage have been doubling each month, from 7,000 hits in May to 12,000-15,000 in June.
