Fastest Pentium 200-MHz
The chip will be quickly eclipsed by a multimedia version that is slated for introduction in the fall. The 200-MHz Pentium processor to be announced Monday will be the new speed king, replacing the 166-MHz version.
200-MHz Motorola chip
A 200-MHz PowerPC chip now shipping in volume from Motorola will start showing up in desktop and notebook systems from Apple, Motorola, and Macintosh clone makers Umax and Power Computing by the end of the year. The PowerPC 603e chip is 11 percent faster than Power Computing's 180-MHz PowerTower system and 33 percent speedier than the fastest current Power Macintosh, which runs on the 150-MHz PowerPC 604 chip.
Businesses pay $800 million hacking cost
According to investigators of the Senate's Permanent Investigations Subcommittee, hackers cost businesses worldwide an estimated $800 million in 1995 through break-ins to computer systems at banks, hospitals, and other large businesses, The investigation showed that security problems seem to be worse in the private sector than in government. More than $400 million of the calculated losses were attributed to U.S. businesses.
Microsoft add ISDN speeds to MSN
Microsoft has launched dual-channel ISDN access to MSN that provides speeds of up to four times that of standard 28.8-kbps modem connections. The dual-channel access allows data to flow simultaneously in both directions between client and server systems, greatly improving connection. Subscription plans that include ISDN access. The Standard Plan offers 90 minutes for $4.95, plus $5 for each additional hour. A frequent user plan allows 10 hours of access for $19.95 per month, with each additional hour costing $4. An Annual Plan is priced at $49.95 per year and allows 90 minutes of access a month, with additional hours priced at $5. Single-channel ISDN access is available at lower rates.
AT&T;Unit Develops Answer to the Cable Modem
AT&T; debuted technology that will allow for Internet access at data transmission speeds up to 400 times faster than a 14.4 modem. The product also will provide for simultaneous voice service on a single, standard phone line, AT&T;said. Largo, FL-based AT&T;Paradyne said it has licensed the technology to about 10 U.S.-based telecommunications equipment makers and another 11 firms overseas. Also AT&T; will offer access to its WorldNet Managed Internet Service for businesses through AT&T's;InterSpan frame-relay service AT&T;said InterSpan frame-relay customers get connectivity between local-area networks and wide-area networks; end- to-end network design and management; disaster recovery; and sustained "bursting" capabilities to higher speeds when more bandwidth is needed temporarily. It offers a variety of access speeds ranging from 56 Kbps to 1024 Kbps.
Microsoft Launches "Normandy"
Microsoft unveiled Normandy. Its new platform developed specifically for Internet service providers, cable companies, network operators, and other commericial entities entitled Normandy. The Normandy platform includes: an Internet mail component, which supports SMTP and POP3 protocols as well as the MIME message format; a news component; a chat component; a "white pages" component, which supports large directories and searches across multiple servers; a personalization component; an information retrieval component, a content-development tool; and a security component, based on the Microsoft Internet Security Framework. Normandy will be available in August through a special preview program to ISPs and other network operators, and is scheduled for broad release late 1996.
Pacific Bell Internet and the Los Angeles Times add dial-up
Pacific Bell Internet and the Los Angeles Times have combined to provide a customized dial-up service for Southern California. The service is up and running, and those interested can currently download the customized Times Web client software. Pricing will range from $9.95 a month for 10 hours of access to $19.95 a month for unlimited access.

Navigator Gold 3.0, the first version available on multiple platforms, can now be downloaded from Netscape Communications Corp.'s site. Navigator Gold has all the functionality of Navigator 3.0, plus it enables the user to create WYSIWYG HTML documents on the fly and publish them to the Web. Version 3.0 supports table creation and editing, adds document-management and version-control features, has a link-creation icon, and lets the user drag and drop any object--including graphics files--into the HTML page being created. Versions are available for Windows 95, Windows NT and Macintosh. Shrink-wrapped versions will ship early next month. The retail for Navigator Gold 3.0 will be $79, or $29 to upgrade from the previous version. Unix and Windows 3.1 beta versions will be ready for download early this month, Leuchtner said. The first version of Navigator Gold was 2.01, which shipped about two months ago for Windows 95 only, and Gold 3.0 is the first cross-platform product.
