Corel to make software for Net boxes
The company announced plans today to deliver a Java version of its existing suite of office productivity applications that will run on any Java-enabled browsers on any platform, including the coming Network Computers. Corel's Java applications will turn up early 1997,

Colleges students get charged for Net use
Some California campuses are charging students for Internet access. The University of California and California State University systems began contracting last fall with outside Internet service providers, such as NetCom and Sprint, to offer fee-based dial-up Net access for academics, faculty, and students, according to the report. Since then, various community colleges have made similar moves.

MCI offers internet backup systems
NetworkMCI Backup service compresses and encrypts data, which it then stores on MCI servers. Company officials say the cost will depend on the amount of data the customer backs up, but $12.95 a month will allow the user to store 50MB of data.

Pac Bell offers Net service
Pacific Bell announced its Internet dial-up access service for the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, San Diego, and Los Angeles, regions. Dubbed Pacific Bell Internet it will offer service to about 90 percent of all California residential and small business users by early 1997.

Cable modems growing
Cable modem shipments are expected to jump 92 percent this year, according to a report released today from market research firm Dataquest. The cable modem market will grow to 25,000 units in 1996 and will surge 220 percent in 1997 when unit shipments are expected to reach 80,000 units, Dataquest said. "Cable modem vendors, teamed with cable operators, have a real opportunity to penetrate the consumer base of the remote LAN and Internet access market," Dataquest said.
