Infoseek launches personalized service

Infoseek Corp. released a new ad-supported Web-based service, dubbed Infoseek Personal The service allows users to build a customized menu of news and information, from sources including Reuters and Usenet newsgroups.


Classroom News Service for Schools

United Press International and MCI Communications in a a joint venture that also involves the Telis Foundation of Irvine, CA ().launched a Web-based product called the Classroom News Service that will offer curriculum-related news to more than 100,000 schools in the U.S. The educational project, is in English and Spanish.



Prodigy Services Co.'s management and International Wireless Inc. said Sunday they agreed to buy the online company for a price about $200 million

Internet Key To New Apple Strategy

Apple Computer said it plans to make the Internet central to its strategy, doing for the Internet what it did for personal computing -- make it user friendly.
Apple plans to:
* Make all Macintosh computers will be Internet-ready.
* Cross-license technologies with other Internet leaders
* Use the Internet to run Apple's own business better, enhancing communication with customers and developers by expanding efforts to create innovative Web sites.
* Make its platforms best-of-class for Internet access, content creation and delivery.


CompuServe will adopt a new standard for regulating online content by attaching ratings to all its Internet sites by July 1. It will use a rating system designed by the Recreational Software Advisory Council (RSAC) that is fully compliant with the new Platform for Internet Content Selection specification released this week by the World Wide Web Consortium.

AOL said its membership would surpass 6 million this week.
It also reported quarterly net income of $15.1 million, or $0.14 per share, on revenues of $312 million, up from a loss of $3.3 million, or $0.05 per share, on revenues of $109.1 million for the same period last year. Also new heavy-user pricing option effective July 1 that offers members 20 hours of use for $19.95 per month, compared to the current $54.20.

Odyssey's annual survey of at-home information and entertainment.

The survey revealed that 53% of cable subscribers now receive at least one premium channel up, from 46% two years ago. It also says consumers use their VCRs to tape shows an average of 13.3 times per month.

The survey found that 4.5 million U.S. households have direct broadcast satellite service -- making it more than just a phenomenon limited to those without access to cable hookups. Consumers are also using their computers more and more. The average home PC user spends 11.4 hours per week using the computer for personal use as opposed to 8.5 hours last year.


Netscape Communications unveiled new software that makes it easier for companies to collect payments on the Internet and to build online businesses.

Netscape LivePayment allows companies to accept credit card payments for information, goods and services available from corporate Web sites. The software uses high-grade encryption technology to safeguard electronic transactions.

LivePayment is expected to be available for Microsoft Windows NT and major UNIX operating environments beginning in the third quarter at a price of $2,995.
