Sharp said it will introduce in the Japanese market in April three new models in its "Mebius" notebook personal computer series, which feature easy access to the Internet. The new models are equipped with color liquid crystal displays (LCDs) with high aperture rate, communication modems, Pentium 133 MHz or 120 MHz processors, one-gigabyte hard disk drives, and four-speed CD-ROM drives. Internet sign-up and navigation software and English-to-Japanese translation software for the Internet are pre-installed.

In a new market research study, Dataquest said it expects about 33 percent of homes in the United States to own a PC by the end of 1996 In 1996, the market is expected to grow by 8 percent. The report estimated that the total installed base of personal computers in U.S. homes will number 47.4 million units in 1996. That figure will grow less than 8 percent to 69.1 million PCs in 1999. The Dataquest report estimated that about 37 percent of U.S. homes will own a personal computer by the turn of the century.
Prodigy Services Co. will begin a service that links customers directly to the Internet for $1 an hour. The service, called Access Net Direct, targets newcomers to the Internet global computer network. Customers will be able to browse the Internet without subscribing to Prodigy's regular on- line service as long as they have a computer, modem and Netscape Communications Corp.'s Navigator software for browsing the Internet.
