BRIDGEWATER, N.J. - AT&T;says its Worldnet Internet service went operational today and it has already received 212,000 orders since its marketing launch on February 27.
The National Science Foundation says it will offer grants to scientists and engineers to upgrade computer networks that make up parts of the Internet. The foundation hopes any new technology developed for its program will lead to better services for all Internet users, both scientists and surfers alike.The grants are expected to be about $350,000 a piece. They are expected to be issued later this fall, ultimately in batches of about 10 to 20 a year.
The Internet Channel, bidding to be first in the Southeast to provide Internet connections through cable TV networks, opened for business Wednesday in Charleston, S.C. The channel is negotiating with cable TV companies with a subscriber base of more than 300,000 customers in five Southeastern states to carry its Internet service through ``set-top boxes.
